Carlene Marshall

January 18, 1925 — June 5, 2019

Carlene G. (Hovey) (Benoit) Marshall , 94, devoted mother and resident of the Canterbury Inn, formally of Lyndonville passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.

Carlene was born in St. Johnsbury on January 18, 1925 to the late Carl and Alice (Miles) Hovey. She was raised and educated in St. Johnsbury. She attended St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1943.

She married Neil G. Benoit in 1941 and they had 5 children. Carlene had a wonderful sense of humor and liked to share short stories or jokes that would make you laugh out loud. No matter when you met her she would want to talk about her children. She would always say: "Did I ever tell you, I have the best children in the world." She was a loving and devoted mother. She was very happy and content with her wonderful care, loving friends and staff at the Canterbury Inn.

She worked for 15 years as a sales clerk for Paul Aubin Jewelers. She then retired and dedicated her time to family and pursuing her hobbies. She loved to sew, knit, read and garden.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Lyndonville.

In 1975, she married Francis Marshall who predeceased her in 2006. Carlene is survived by her five children: Pamela Simpson of Lyndonville, VT; Mary Marley of Wilmington, NC; Thomas Benoit and his wife Linda of Bolton, VT; Anne Peramba and husband Richard DrozdaI of Conway, MA; and Alice Herrmann of Conway, MA; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Carlene was predeceased by her husband Francis Marshall, her sister Virginia Blair, and 3 son-in-laws, Elliott Atkinson, Paul Herrmann, and Gary Simpson.

The last few hours of her life were spent at NVRH where she received excellent care and attention.

The burial will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2019 followed by a Memorial Service and reception at 11 am at the United Methodist Church in Lyndonville.
