As of July 1, 2016 the Funeral Homes have been under the ownership of Stephen & Helen Robertson. Please bear with us until this page is fully updated.
Rodney Sayles has been a licensed funeral director and embalmer since 1976 and had co-owned and operated Sayles Funeral Home since 1978. He grew up on Main St. in St. Johnsbury and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1971, the University of Vermont in 1975, and the New England Institute in 1976. He continues to play an active role in the business.
Karen Sayles was the co-owner and corporate secretary. She is a teacher in the Barton school system and an active member of the North Congregational Church.
The Sayles raised their family of three children living above the funeral home and still live in St. Johnsbury.
Stephen Robertson is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Vermont and New Hampshire. A native of Tennessee, Steve chose funeral service as his vocation, graduating from F.I.N.E. in 2002. He had been employed at Newton Bartlett Funeral Home in Newport until joining Sayles Funeral Home/Guibord Funeral Home in June 2015. He married Helen Lynch of Colebrook; this summer (2016) the Robertsons moved into the living quarters above the Sayles Funeral Home with the youngest four of their eight children. Daughter Rebecca is already enrolled as a freshman at St. Johnsbury Academy while the younger three attend the Good Shepherd Catholic School.
In Memoriam: Thomas Barrett started a new career in funeral service in 1996 and was a licensed funeral director. Tom was a 1976 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and married Patti Gaskin of Lyndonville. Tom was affiliated principally at Guibord Funeral Home in Lyndonville. He lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on July 8, 2016 and is still greatly missed.
We salute longtime Guibord Funeral Homes associates Ernie and Beverly Coolbeth who both passed away within four months of each other in late 2015 and early 2016. They will be missed.
Meredith Gilbert is the office administrator at the Sayles Funeral Home. She grew up in Danville, graduating high school in 1999 and obtained an associate’s degree from Lyndon State College in 2001. She previously worked at Moose River Media and currently lives in Peacham with her husband and four children.
Shelly Smith is the office administrator at Guibord Funeral Home. She grew up in St. Johnsbury and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1989. Her past jobs included working in schools, where she was honored to work with families in the education field.
Sayles Funeral Home is located at 525 Summer St. in St. Johnsbury. The funeral home was renovated in the 1980s to handle large gatherings, yet the building maintains its warm Victorian charm and homey atmosphere.
Renovations to the Guibord Funeral Home in the late 1990’s have resulted in a spacious and accommodating funeral home facility capable of comfortably seating over a hundred attendees. The original stained glass windows have been enhanced with windows done by local artist Elizabeth Robbins. Both funeral homes are appointed with artwork done by Roderick Wells depicting scenes recognizable by the local towns we serve.
